There may be no perfect age to become a parent, but according to reports from the National Center for Family and Marriage Research, the average age a man becomes a dad is between 27 and 30. For some men, though—including these celebs—becoming a dad can happen at any age.
In fact, some famous fathers have doubled the average, becoming dads past the age of 65. We have to hand it to them—keeping up with a toddler is hard enough in your 30s. It's tough to imagine it after retirement! Here are some old celebrity pops who had children later in life...
1. Jeff Goldblum, 62
The now-64-year-old actor may have been married before, but he once told Parade that he never considered having kids until he met wife, Emilie Livingston. Now the couple, married three years and already parents to 2-year-old son Charlie Ocean, have just added another little boy to the mix—baby River Joe, born Friday, April 7, 2017.
The proud mama shared the happy news over on Instagram: “I can’t believe it’s been a week already!” she wrote in the caption of a slideshow of adorable family shots. “Charlie Ocean is such a sweet and caring older brother. We couldn’t be happier!!! Jeff Goldblum is our rock and continues to be an exceptionally loving and passionate father! Love my boys!!!”
2. Mick Jagger, 73
Papa is a Rolling Stone! Mick Jagger welcomed his eighth child—a son, with girlfriend Melanie Hamrick—at the age of 73. According to the Daily Mail, the two have no plans of marrying, but the rock legend flew 3,500 miles from London to New York at the last minute to be with Hamrick for the birth. The new addition joins Jagger’s three older sons—James, 31; Gabriel, 18; and Lucas, 17—plus daughters Karis, 46; Jade, 45; Elizabeth, 32; and Georgia May, 24.
The Stones frontman also has five grandchildren and even became a great-grandfather (!) in May 2014, to Jade's daughter Assisi’s baby girl. Meanwhile, Jagger’s new son arrives just six months after bandmate Ronnie Wood's wife gave birth to twin girls, which should make for some pretty interesting playdates! Congrats, guys!
3. Ronnie Wood, 68
It seems time is on his side. The Rolling Stones legend Ronnie Wood and his wife Sally Humphreys, who is 31 years his junior, welcomed twin girls just two days before his 69th birthday. Wood has four adult children from previous relationships, so he may know a thing or two about the “Midnight Rambler” routine with newborns. (His oldest child, musician Jesse Wood, was 39 years old when the twins were born.)
A spokesperson for the couple said, “Ronnie and Sally Wood are delighted to announce the birth of their twins Gracie Jane (6 lb.) and Alice Rose (5.7 lb.). The girls arrived on May 30 at 10:30 p.m. and all are doing brilliantly. The babies are perfect.” Congratulations to the Woods
4. Billy Joel, 66
In August, the legendary singer welcomed another 'Uptown Girl' to his family at the age of 66. His fourth wife, Alexis Roderick, gave birth to Della Rose and the very next day, Joel performed 'My Life' and showed off photos of his newborn daughter. We have to wonder how his first daughter, 29-year-old Alexa Ray (whose mom is Joel's ex-wife Christie Brinkley), feels about losing her "only child" title!
5. George Lucas, 69
George Lucas and wife Mellody Hobson welcomed their daughter, Everest, in 2014, when Lucas was 69. She was delivered via surrogate and is the first biological child for Lucas and Hobson, though Lucas has three adopted children: Amanda, 34, Katie, 27, and Jett, 22.
6. Steve Martin, 67
He might have won our hearts in Father of the Bride, but he didn't have a child of his own until he was 67 in 2012 with wife Anne Stringfield. Though his daughter is 3 this year, her name has still not been revealed and no further details have been released.
7. Robert De Niro, 68
Talk about an age difference: Robert De Niro's eldest child, Drena, was 40 when his youngest child, Helen Grace, was born! De Niro and his wife, Grace Hightower, welcomed Helen via surrogate, when Grace was 56 and De Niro was 68. We wonder if De Niro will make a mafia family of his own, with six children and four grandchildren.
8. Alec Baldwin, 55
After falling for NYC yoga teacher Hilaria Thomas, Alec Baldwin married and had a baby quickly, at the age of 55. Now he has two young children, Carmen Gabriela and Rafael Thomas, in addition to 19-year-old daughter Ireland (whose mom is Kim Basinger).
9. Hugh Grant, 51
He may be the British hunk we all dream of in romantic comedies, but becoming a dad was a shock for Grant, who had his first child at the age of 51 with girlfriend Tinglan Hong. "I can't pretend it wasn't a little bit of a surprise," he said about the first pregnancy. We can only imagine what he thought when he welcomed another child the very next year, at the age of 52.
10. Rod Stewart, 66
It's a Father of the Bride story that's true! When rocker Rod Stewart welcomed his youngest, son Aiden, at the age of 66 in 2011, his daughter, Kimberly, had a baby six months later. Maybe Uncle Aiden will go to the same college as his niece?
11. Hugh Hefner, 66
At the age of 66, Hugh Hefner had his last child, Cooper, with then-Playmate of the Year Kimberley Conrad. It's been rumored that Hefner is teaching Cooper the ropes to take over the Playboy enterprise.
12. Bruce Willis, 57
Bruce Willis is surrounded by beautiful women, that's for sure. Even though his three children—Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah—with ex-wife Demi Moore were almost grown in 2012, he welcomed a third daughter, Mabel Ray, at the age of 57. Two years later, he and wife Emma Heming had another daughter, Evelyn Penn.
13. Michael Douglas, 58
At 58, actor Michael Douglas and his long-time wife, actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, welcomed their second child together, Carys Zeta Douglas. They also have a son, Dylan Michael, who was 2 and a half when Carys was born, and Douglas has a 24-year-old son, Cameron, from a previous marriage.
