Early Work Experience
In 1951, Hugh got his first job as a promotional copywriter with Esquire magazine earning a salary of $40 per week, the following year, when Hugh was deprived of a $5 raise, he quitted and after 11 months started the ‘Playboy’ magazine. Hugh needed to take a loan of $600 from a bank, a mortgage and heaved a sum of $8,000 from 45 investors which included his Mum, when Hugh asked for money from his father, his father rebuffed him because he thought the magazine would not bring in enough profit -Hugh later proved him wrong, ‘Playboy’ magazine was and is still a huge success. Hugh did not give up even though he was not exactly sure of the future of the magazine, he only printed about 54,000 copies of the December issue of the magazine which had the nude picture of Marilyn Monroe as its cover photo in 1953.
