Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926. Her adoption story is a long and sad one. Her mother, Gladys Baker, placed her daughter in foster care after she became unable to support her for both financial and mental reasons.

Marilyn lived with foster parents until age seven, when her mother attempted to reclaim her. Unfortunately, she once again failed to provide a stable home. Marilyn finally found a home with Gladys' good friend Grace, who housed Marilyn on and off until she hit her teens. Subject to various abuses at the hands of Grace's husband and relatives, she married in her late teens to avoid being placed in foster care yet again.

She divorced her husband in 1946 when she took on the name Marilyn Monroe and started her acting career.
