At one time, the father of the actor, Hatton, filed a lawsuit against the city administration and won the case, and with the money received he took the family from New York to Australia. There, young Mel took the first steps in the theater field. He entered the Institute of Stage Arts in Sydney and participated in productions, including the main role in the play Romeo and Juliet. Gibson didn’t seriously think about acting career but one day his friend asked him to give him a lift to the film set.
However, a day before, Gibson got into a drunken brawl in a bar. When he arrived at the film set, his wounded face immediately convinced the director that he was in front of a hero from the hopeless world described in the script.
