Many A-listers use their fame to address matters that are important to them: politics, mental health, and the environment all get our favorite stars talking. For others, their activism speaks to a more painful and controversial issue in American public life: race.
A growing number of stars have taken advantage of their platforms to call out the casual racism that we don’t all surely notice in our lives every day. Here are eight celebs who have done just that
1. Taylor Swift
In the past, singer-songwriter Taylor Swift has been called out for staying silent on political matters, but that all changed ahead of the 2018 midterm elections when the usually quiet musician shared a lengthy Instagram post asking people to vote and clarifying her political point of view.
The singer wrote on Instagram, explaining to followers why she would be voting for Democrat Senate and Congressional candidates Phil Bredesen and Senate and Jim Cooper, respectively:
“In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now.”
“I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening, and prevalent. I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender, or who they love.”
