As 2018 is wrapping up, and companies are doing their annual checks and balance, entrepreneurs comparing sales and profits for the year as against the previous year(s), individuals going through their goals for the year, it is only right that Hollywood does a review of some of the wins and losses for the year. Hollywood is truly one of the major sources of entertainment in the world, as the year has been such a wild one and has seen the production of many movies, however screens asides, there is more to Hollywood. Recently, it was the case with Kevin Hart dropping the ‘gig’ as the host for the Oscars because some of his tweets were dug up, sexual assaults on CEO of CBS, which led to his retrenchment, and Disney topping box-office charts. Such a wild one. Here are some of the wins and losses in Hollywood this year.

We are starting this list with a win. For some of you that do not know, Disney is the parent company of Marvel, so any success for Marvel Studios is a win for Disney. This company really gave their audience so much this year, that there was no bad movie from their end. With the release of ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ it made a sum of $2 billion across the globe and is likely to be nominated for an Oscar.

Claire Foy

The first loss is from the actress – Claire Foy’s camp. Don’t get us wrong; she has had some pretty good times this year as she got an Emmy award for her performance in the Netflix production – ‘The Crown.’ She is also likely to get a nomination for another role in the movie ‘First Man,’ fingers crossed on that one. But for the rest of the year, she featured in a couple of other movies which didn't thrive well in the box-office, a very notable one is the movie -’The Girl in the Spider's Web’ which only grossed $33 million worldwide, while its production cost was $43 million.

It is a double win for these two great actors – Emily Blunt and John Krasinski. These two took their off-screen love to the screens with the movie – ‘A Quiet Place,’ which was one of the highest grossing movies of the year - $340 million across the globe. Seems like a family affair, as the movie was written and directed by John. Asides this successful movie, they both have bigger roles in the works. John for the second season of the Amazon series ‘Jack Ryan,’ and Emily for Disney’s ‘Mary Poppins Returns.’

It is quite sad that the ‘Star Wars’ franchise’s latest release – ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ didn’t perform as expected, or as the previous series. On a regular, ‘Star Wars’ series gross nothing less than $1 billion worldwide . But with this one, it didn’t even reach the $400 million mark. Although, the movie is still on top for the year’s highest grossing movies, it can still be deemed far from successful. Anyways, we are anticipating another ‘Star Wars’ series in 2019. Hopefully, it would break records for good.

Jon M. Chu

The short story of the director, Jon M. Chu seems like one which would totally motivate you to keep your head up and not get discouraged when things don’t go so well at first. With his previous movies such as ‘Step Up 3D, ’ ‘G. I Joe: Retaliation, ‘Jem and the Hologram’ which didn’t quite make the mark and were disappointments, he bounced back with the trending Asian themed romantic movie of the year – ‘Crazy Rich Asians.’ Not just Jon, but the star actors have been trending as well, thanks to the success of the movie.

Okay, this one is a different turn of a loss. It is more of a shame than a deprivation. So, the CEO of CBS – Les Moonves has been trending this year for the wrong reasons. A number of women have come out to accuse the businessman of sexually harassing them in the past, as reported by ‘New Yorkers.’ These allegations have affected the integrity of the company and have since then made him step down. He still maintains his stance on not being guilty, but we will see how this ends soon enough.

With the loss that the former CBS’s CEO – Les Moonves got this year, because of the several sexual assault accusations to his name, it automatically became a win for the major shareholder of the companies – CBS and Viacom. For a while now, Shari has been trying to merge the companies mentioned above together but had been receiving a setback from Les. But with Les out of the way, the merger looks like a done deal, or maybe not quite. But she sure is a significant figure in the industry right now.

Taron Egerton

It looks like the year had been jinxed for the actor – Taron Egerton, or how do you explain playing major roles in two box office movies, and they turned out to be unsuccessful? First, he was in the movie ‘Billionaire Boys Club’ which made a meager sum of $126 on the launch day and $600 the weekend after, which is already a sign of a failed movie. Then he starred in ‘Robin Hood’ which hit rock bottom for that much of a budget -100 million USD used for its production.

Unlike his hypothetical and unofficial best friend - Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart is having a rough end of the year following the issue with hosting the Oscars. Shortly after the announcement of Kevin as the award show’s host, haters dug up some of his past tweets which were considered homophobic.
