Netflix’s dark comedy, ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ is based on a book written by Daniel Handler under the pen name, Lemony Snicket.
Just like the book with the same name, ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ follows the adventures (or misadventures as is their case) of three orphans who are constantly pursued by their nemesis, Count Olaf played by Neil Patrick Harris. The Baudelaire kids; Violet, Klaus, and Sunny; became master planners as they tried to overcome evil and cunning Count Olaf who came in disguise of a guardian but only interested in their family’s fortune.
Talking of disguises, the cast of the TV series used a lot of that, but sometimes they look normal especially when you see them in person.
We have put together this read to show you what the cast of ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ looks like in real life. Who knows? You might walk past any of them on the streets.
Popularly known as Lemony Snicket, Daniel Handler is a writer and musician. ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ is one of his most popular works; even before it was adopted into a Netflix series. In the show, the outstanding novelist narrates the series. He even contributed to the lyrics of the show’s theme song.
Lemony Snicket is played by Patrick Warburton who is so perfect for the role. With his deep voice, Warburton switches between funny and serious tone and that made the narration a lot more interesting. Handler, however, made one or two cameo appearances in the series.
We introduce to you the eldest of the Baudelaire siblings, Violet Baudelaire. As fictional as it may sound, Violet can get herself and her siblings out of any predicament they find themselves with her creative genius for inventing mechanical devices.
Violet is played by a 15-year-old actress called Malina Weissman. Playing Violet in the series is Malina’s first significant role. She’s had a small role in ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,’ a 2014 movie. Weissman also plays the young Kara Zor-El in ‘Supergirl.’
Klaus is the middle sibling who is outstandingly well-read for his age. The young boy never stops to question what happened to their parents, and he would do all he can to get his answers.
Klaus was played by Louis Hynes who in real life is a couple of years older than Malina Weissman, his elder sister in the series. Just as his character is a bookworm, Hynes is obsessed with music.
Sunny is the youngest of the three, and she is an adult in the body of an infant. Sunny is just as witty and wise as her older siblings despite her tender age. Sunny’s superpower is her extremely sharp teeth. The fantastic character is brought to life by Presley Smith, who is a baby in real life.
Most of the actions of the cast are stunts and aided by digital effects. However, the voice of Sunny in the series was Tara Strong’.
Tara Strong is a veteran voice actress. Her works include: voicing Timmy Turner in ‘The Fairly OddParents,’ Bubbles in ‘Powerpuff Girls,’ and Twilight Sparkle in ‘My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.’
This is not the sweet Olaf you all know from ‘Frozen,’ the Olaf here is the villain of the series. He is an actor who is likely responsible for the death of the Baudelaire’s parents. Olaf wants the Baudelaire’s family fortune to his undeserved self. The adults around the family seem to fall for his devices, but the kids always see through his disguises.
Count Olaf is Neil Patrick Harris in real life. The actor has no beard nor an eye shape tattoo on his left ankle.
This character was introduced in the second season. Squalor portrayed a fashionable Baudelaire guardian in the ‘Ersatz Elevator’ section. She’s beautiful but not inside out, and she has a dark secret.
Thanks to Comedic actress Lucy Punch, Esmé Squalor was brought to life in her glory.
As Esmé takes on a more prominent role in the series, Punch’s talent grows like wildfire, and it becomes one of our favorite parts of the show.
The Hook-Handed Man
At the sight of this character, it wouldn’t take you a minute to figure that he is one of the crucial members of Count Olaf’s evil company. Just as his name suggests, he has hooks for hands.
Usman Ally performs his maliciously coward deeds. Don’t be deceived, Usman Ally has working hands in real life. If you’re an avid follower of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D,’ you may know him as Vincent.
Arthur Poe is the family banker who’s been put in charge of the placing the Baudelaire children in the care of a proper guardian. Poet is also in charge of the family’s estate until the kids are of age. You would expect the kids to be in good hands since Poe is given that much responsibility. The reverse is the case. Poe is so useless that he couldn’t even find them a good home let alone keep them from the fangs of Count Olaf.
Arthur Poe is played by the award-winning Broadway actor Ken Todd Freeman. He usually is not a mustache person in real life. He likes it neatly shaven.
Arthur Poe’s wife, Eleanora Poe, is an editor at The Daily Punctilio. The Daily Punctilio is the leading newspaper which Lemony Snicket created in his world. The paper stalks the Baudelaires and their Archenemy, Count Olaf. Sadly, the press gets the basic facts wrong. Like every other adult on the show, Eleanora is easily influenced and receptive to every information, especially the incorrect ones.
Cleo King brought the character to life; as described in the books. King has played supporting roles in several TV shows over the years. They include ‘Six Feet Under,’ ‘Ally McBeal,’ and ‘Sons of Anarchy.’
Unlike the other characters, Jacqueline Scieszka was never in the books. Her role wasn’t a bad idea after all. Scieszka shows a particular interest in the Baudelaires despite her day job at the bank. She’s an assistant to Mr. Poe and also a member of the secret society whose keen interest in protecting the Baudelaire orphans.
Sara Canning has the role. If you’ve seen the ‘War for the Planet of the Apes,’ you would recognize her straight away. She also starred in the CW’s ‘The Vampire Diaries.’
The Henchperson of Indeterminate Gender
Talk of the prominent members of Count Olaf’s evil troupe, here is another one. The Henchperson of Indeterminate Gender, however, is a pain in the bum to Count Olaf. He is one of the very few who question Count Olaf’s goals. He likes to say insightful things that earn Olaf’s wrath.
New Hampshire born actor, Matty Cardarople portrays the Henchperson of Indeterminate Gender. Cardarople starred in other blockbuster movies such as ‘Jurassic World’ and appeared on other TV shows like ‘Selfie,’ ‘Scrubs.’ He plays Keith on ‘Stranger Things.’
The White-Faced Women
Count Olaf has a lot of freaks in his company and amongst them are the Two White-Faced Women. The sisters love Count Olaf and will do anything for him. As long as he is pleased.
Thanks to twin sisters Jacqueline and Joyce Robbins, we can appreciate the White-Faced Women described in Lemony Snicket’s novel. Joyce Robbins has had some minor roles. She starred in ‘Ice’ and ‘Psych.’ Jacqueline Robbins was also on ‘Psych’ and appeared on ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.’
Carmelita Spats is an annoying, tutu-wearing student at Prufrock Preparatory School where she met the Baudelaire orphans. Spats is obviously a spoiled rich kid who takes every chance to get at the children. She calls them ‘cakesniffers.’ Carmelita Spats becomes Olaf’s adopted daughter.
