Not like there are rumours of some failing health of the reigning British monarch, Queen Elizabeth the Second, but we can’t help but imagine how disruptive the British kingdom would be should the Queen pass away.
She is currently 92 years old, and has been Queen since 1952. What would happen when her reign ends? Have a glimpse.
A Long Time Coming
While we hope she continues to reign for a long time, it would not hurt to say that she has been around for a very long time. She has been through the World Wars, and through the times John F. Kennedy was the President of the United States till now.
When She Dies
According to Business Insider, the happenings that would take place, should the Queen pass on, would be very dependent on the way she passed.
If it happens in an expected way, maybe from an illness, proper planning would be put in place as to how the tragic news will be announced.
An Unexpected Passing
However, if the passing wasn’t expected or happens suddenly, then the news would be disseminated in an immediate and unplanned fashion, just the way it was when Princess Diana died in a car crash in 1997.
Whether it was a sudden death or not, most members of staff in the palace will be asked to go home on compulsory leave, and this news would be passed to them through the staff hotline.
TV Format For An Expected Passing
For a passing that was expected, the news would first get sent to major TV channels for immediate airing. For instance, the BBC would stop whatever program is on and make the announcement.
If it happens in her sleep, the news would be aired the next day by 8 a.m, according to The Daily Beast.
BBC Already Practicing
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has over the years, been rehearsing how the news would be disseminated. Onetime, the anchor who was rehearsing the announcement got criticized as he wore a red tie to make the faux announcement instead of a black one and black suit.
A Tone Down On The Practicing, Maybe
One time, the periodic practice sessions of the BBC went out of hand as one of the journalists who had not gotten the memo on the rehearsal tweeted that the Queen was dead when he saw the faux recording. It sure had a ripple effect, as many foreign media houses picked up the false information and aired it.
Not A Time To Laugh
There is a time for everything, they say. When the Queen dies, it would definitely not be a time to laugh, hence, all comedy shows on TV would be discontinued to mourn her passing. Just as it happened in 1952 when the last monarch died.
Close Of Business
Government bodies such as in the Department of Culture, Media and culture would close when the announcement is made. Even the London Stock Exchange is most likely to close when this happens.
Flying Flags At Half-Mast
In a salute to the Queen, flags would be flown on Victoria Tower at half-mast and kept up until the day of her funeral. Churches too might ring the alarm or the bell as the case may be to send the sound of mourning.
A Display Of The Strength Of The Empire
Recently, the only news from the royal empire are of marriages and trivial things, but if something as major as the death of the Queen should occur, the whole world and subjects of the great kingdom would turn to the source for news.
Behind The Scenes
While a number of events and show of respect would be going on, on the outside, within the many walls of the St. James Palace, the Accession Council would be meeting to declare Prince Charles as the successor.
A New Monarch’s Swearing In
Without the throne left to void, a new monarch would be announced and he would go on to swear loyalty to Parliament at the council, and to the Church of England.
Also, throughout the country, a Proclamation of Accession would be read out on Proclamation Day.
Politicians Swear Allegiance
And in the political side, the Houses of Parliament would sit and swear their allegiance to the New Monarch. They would also give their condolences to the royal family. After which they wouldn’t meet until the state funeral.
A Change Of Title
As expected, the new monarch which is meant to be Prince Charles would have his title changed from Prince to King. He also has the right to change his name and use one of his other names- Christian or middle name.
