Emma Watson, who is turning 30 in several months, has coined a new term to reduce the pressure of the age threshold she is starting to feel. Known as the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, the Harry Potter saga star is trying to explain how life may become more difficult for women after 30.
In her interview with British Vogue, the celebrity elaborated on the emotional tension women are forced to feel when they reach a certain age. There is a number of expectations they are expected to meet, and if they fail, the tension increases. How is Emma Watson coping?
Is Emma Watson single?
Emma Watson, a passionate activist for women’s rights, does not want to be called single. She is neither married nor in a relationship. She prefers to be called ‘self-partnered’. As she is approaching the age when a woman is often expected to have a husband and children, she is speaking about the tension women may feel if they do not have the mentioned.
Many sources have already compared this novel term to Gwyneth Paltrow’s ‘conscious uncoupling’ that was used to replace the word ‘divorce’. These milder, gentler terms do not have the heavy negative baggage that trails ‘single’ or ‘divorce’.
Emma Watson confesses that she had never thought much about turning 30 until her 29th birthday. It was the moment when she felt the pressure of the subliminal message that surrounds everybody in society. Emma started to feel this anxiety, and there was much of it.
Sociologists confirm that feeling this emotion is normal when a woman turns 30. Unmarried people usually start to give attention to their married friends who already have children. They begin to think of their own accomplishments and achievements and come to the conclusion that there is no time left. It may be a very intense period in one’s life.
Somewhat independent, strong and smart, much like her Hermione Granger character, the young actress claims that she feels perfect without any relationship. ‘I’m very happy being single now,’ she said in her interview.
Sociologists also confirm that unmarried women who are not in a relationship tend to handle their life better than men in the same status. They make friends more easily and establish a network of close people to rely upon and feel secure without a partner.
Many women appreciated this Emma Watson self-partner declaration.
Even now, the western culture tends to evaluate people by their marital status, presence of children and general meeting some standards.
By declaring self-partnership instead of the subconsciously negative word ‘single’ women legitimise their choice to stay unmarried, get rid of nosy questions, and feel support from others.
So, from the point of view of defending women’s rights and liberties, this term and this confession were among the most important and meaningful Emma Watson 2019 public declarations.
