That "Celsius" that we all use in measuring temperatures was actually a Swedish discovery. In 1742, astronomer Anders Celsius presented an early version of the Celsius scale, only with the inverted values: 0 representing boiling point and 100 freezing. At a time when the basics of physics were barely understood, Celsius pointed out that the freezing point of water didn’t change with atmospheric pressure, like the boiling point.

Originally referred to as centigrade, after Latin, the scale was renamed after its inventor in 1948.
