Hackers are not always the bad people, some of them help us test our security. These good hackers are called white hat hackers and they are trained cybersecurity experts that penetrate computer networks to assess their security and search for possible network weaknesses.
Gray hat hackers are those hackers that only hack networks for fun. Blackhat hackers, on the other hand, are hackers who hack networks with malicious intentions – either for their own good or to cause harm.
Here are some of the most malicious black hatters history has seen:
1. Kevin Mitnick
Kevin was so notorious for hacking that the U.S. Department of Justice labeled him as the “most wanted computer criminal in U.S. history”. Kevin Mitnick’s story even inspired a feature film called: Track Down.
What did he do?
Kevin hacked into the Digital Equipment Corporation, copied their software and later hacked into Pacific Bell Company where he is alleged to have copied proprietary software. In addition, he was accused and arrested for breaching the national defense warning system and stealing corporate secrets.
Where is he now?
Mitnick was eventually caught and convicted with a five-year prison sentence. After serving his sentence, he turned around to become a consultant and public speaker for computer security. He now runs Mitnick Security Consulting, LLC, which consults and does penetration testing for some of the Fortune 500 Companies. He also teaches classes on phishing and social engineering.
