1. She Won The Majority
You already know this, that is why you are reading this article, but I will tell you anyway. Ocasio-Cortez seized 57.5% of the votes from the New York’s Fourteenth District which includes the Bronx and Queens. There was a good number who didn’t think Ocasio-Cortez a first-timer could ever beat veteran Crowley, a fourth-ranking House Democrat positioned to possibly assume leadership House speaker.
“We beat a machine with a movement, and that is what we have done today,” Ocasio-Cortez said to her supporters on Tuesday night. “Working-class Americans want a clear champion, and there is nothing radical about moral clarity in 2018.”
2. A Proud Working-Class Latina From The Bronx.
Ocasio-Cortez has proudly pointed out her working-class roots. Her Puerto Rican mother cleaned houses and her father who was a South Bronx native ran a small business. Until last year Ocasio-Cortez worked in restaurants and bartending to help her family. She was actually shoulder to shoulder with the undocumented people in the back of the house as she told culture website Remezcla. There is actually a photo of her working behind the bar that is doing rounds online and has been retweeted more than 25,000 times. She actually attended Boston University and worked for Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts.
3. She Ran On A Progressive, Socialist Platform
Being a community organizer and educator who had volunteered on the Bernie Sanders’ campaign in 2016, she was actually backed up by Democratic Socialists of America. In her proposals she strongly advocates for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement(ICE), reforming the criminal justice system, instituting Medicare for all, guaranteeing federal jobs and establishing a tuition-free college. Before the primary race, Ocasio – Cortez had spent most of her time at the demos protesting the separation of immigrant families at the Tornillo-Guadalupe Port of entry in Texas.
4. She Rejected Corporate Donations
Ocasio-Cortez ran her campaigns at the grassroots without corporate donors. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the lady raised more than $300,000 as per contributions of $200 or less, with an average campaign contribution of $18. This is very unlike Crowley who had raised millions of dollars which were enough to blind all those who considered Ocasio-Cortez a threat. Actually, in his overconfident nature, Crowley skipped two debates with Ocasio-Cortez. Ocasio- Cortez’s bid was the first made against Crowley in the 14 years he has been running.

In her video, she says, " Women like me aren't supposed to run for office. I wasn't born to a wealthy or powerful family," she says in the video, adding later, "I've worked with expectant mothers, I've waited tables, and led classrooms, and going into politics wasn't in the plan. But after 20 years of the same representation, we have to ask: Who has New York been changing for?"
Those words in the video and more had many people taking interest and following her every move.
6. She Might be Youngest Woman Elected To Congress
She will run against the Republican candidate Anthony Pappas in the November midterms. If she defeats Pappas, she will be the youngest ever woman elected to Congress. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is one of the women making great strides toward political history in the recent primary elections.
