The 2018 World Cup has featured a lot of controversies so far. As you read these words, furious debates are erupting in bars, offices, and homes all over the world. Nothing, it turns out, brings people together or pushes people further apart than the introduction of a Video Assistant Referee system.
Here are the five biggest talking points from the tournament so far.
1. Ronaldo vs. Messi
For their respective clubs, it’s clear that Lionel Messi has had a more significant impact than Cristiano Ronaldo. More trophies, more goals, and more assists put pay to that.
But on the world stage, Messi seems incapable of single-handedly saving his nation like the Portuguese powerhouse. Ronaldo was on track to be the World Cup’s top scorer before Portugal was eliminated in the quarter-final stage, while the Argentine (with more talented teammates) crashed out at the round of 16 against France.
