In the past, Nike only targeted marathon runners. When the fitness trend emerged and Reebok then, Nike’s main competitor was actually selling more shoes, Nike knew it had to do something. The marketing people at Nike took their time and finally came up with a marketing campaign. It started in the late 1980s and was called the “Just Do it,” campaign.
The campaign became a great hit and by 1988, Nike’s sales were at an impressive $800 million. The sales got to $9.2billion by 1998. “Just Do It” was that short and sweet slogan that everyone needed to relate to when they want to push themselves beyond their limit when working out.
Nike clearly thought about how to best present their brand. They solved a problem for their customers and identified exactly what their customers needed by connecting with them on an emotional level that is often difficult to ignore.
