The average human lifespan has risen dramatically in the last century. This has been accomplished largely, thanks to the fruits of advancements in technology, science, and medicine - but could humankind ever achieve immortality?
Using things like vaccinations, we've been able to exterminate life-threatening infections like smallpox. But pathogens, predators, and accidents aside, could we ever transform the way we live or our very bodies to become immortal?
In order to achieve this, we'll need to overcome some of the principal issues that cause aging, and eventually death. Science has identified 4 key processes that cause us to age:-
- Chronological aging
- Telomere shortening
- Oxidative stress
If the above can be reduced, stopped or eliminated, humans may just be able to live forever.
Below are 11 potential technologies and theories that could help us achieve the 'Holy Grail' of eternal life.
1. Regenerative Blood Transfusions
Although the idea sounds a little ghastly, dare we say vampiric, it could be employed to extend the human lifespan by a decade or two, perhaps more. Scientists have seen that a protein called GDF11 is common in the blood of young mice but scarce in older mice.
GDF11 has been shown to increase skeletal muscle and improve heart strength. If it can be replicated and linked with our increasing knowledge of synthesizing blood, regenerative blood transfusions could become commonplace in the nearest future.
