Perhaps you've heard about the women who have been protesting, bare-breasted, all over Europe. They are known as FEMEN.
The movement which started in Ukraine describes itself as “fighting patriarchy in its three manifestations – sexual exploitation of women, dictatorship, and religion.”
Radical in their actions and beliefs, FEMEN activists describe themselves as “physically and morally fit soldiers, who every day make civil actions of the high degree of difficulty and provocativity”. Here are key facts about FEMEN.
1. The FEMEN Movement was founded in 2008
Anna Hutsol and Oksana Shachko founded FEMEN in Kiev in 2008 after they became aware of stories of Ukrainian women duped into going abroad and then taken advantage of sexually. The ladies had the backing of mastermind Victor Svyatski, who considers himself the “patriarch in an organization against patriarchy.”
