Opened in 1947 as a women’s clothing shop called Hennes in Västerås, founder Erling Persson later acquired hunting and fishing equipment store Mauritz Widforss, formally changed its name to Hennes & Mauritz, and added men’s and kids’ clothing in 1968.
Since then, the business has expanded to over 2,500 shops around the world selling trendy clothes and accessories at affordable rates. Along with an eco-friendly clothesline, H&M makes sure that its 700 suppliers are audited to meet its code of conduct in terms of child labor and workplace safety issues among other things.
