Last year, one or more people in Michaelia Cash's office tipped off journalists about a pending AFP raid connected to an investigation by the Registered Organizations Commission (ROC), initiated by the government, into the AWU's donations to GetUp a decade ago. The ROC's inquiry is aimed at Bill Shorten, leader of the AWU when the donations were made.
Creation of the Registered Organizations Commission (ROC)
This is the regulator responsible for scrutinizing how unions are managed.
The legislation to create it was passed in November 2016.
At that time, Senator Cash rejected it was about "union busting", rather arguing that the ROC was important for "increasing transparency and accountability".
Labor had not supported the legislation because it wanted some amendments, including making the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) the regulator of union officials, not the ROC.
