Everyone endeavors to be happier, but the truth is some people are more successful than others at achieving happiness. Why? Most people feel they know what they need to be happy. However, the science of happiness reveals some shocking truths. Find out what research says about what we really need to find inner happiness below.
1. Put others first
When you choose to live selflessly and dedicate your time to making the world better for the people you love, your life becomes better as a result. An American psychiatrist and professor at the Harvard Medical School, George Vaillant, is the director of one of the most revered longitudinal research on happiness, the Grant Study. The study measured lifelong happiness of 237 Harvard students from 1939 to 1944.
Following the completion of the Grant Study, Vaillant was able to reach this conclusion: “The only thing that really matters in life are your relationships to other people.” When you meditate about it, you understand that this statement is true. You establish strong relationships by doing things for other people and expecting nothing in return. Do not take your relationships for granted. Make other peoples’ lives happier, and your happiness will follow suit.
